You do not need to remove the pump pulley or see the keyway, you set the static timing with a 15mm tool/ 15mm tube that fits through one of the holes in the pump pulley and locks the position, if that is right then it should start. Timing of vw engine. You'll need a timing light connected to the number on spark plug wire. On the top of the transmission, below the cylinder head, you should see a round plug, (usually green) with a clear plug in it. Remove the plug, you can then see the flywheel, there will be marks on the flywheel to set the timing.

My mechanic replaced the head gasket to no avail,then we checked the oil filter,that was ok.then we went on to a web forum and found out that the AXD engine suffers from water pump failure.We took it off and it was corroded,the seal had failed and was pumping water into the block.My advice,CHECK WATER PUMP FIRST!
